As the holiday season approaches, I find myself reflecting on the past, seeking the foundation of joy and hope that sustains me. I think back to my childhood, where family, faith, food, and laughter filled our gatherings. It seemed as though the world paused long enough for us to focus on what truly mattered. Then, as my wife and I started raising our own children, we carefully crafted the principles we wanted them to hold dear—once again, family, faith, food, and laughter remained at the center.
Now, as the coming months bring concerns, changes, and unknowns, those same foundational pillars call to me, reminding me to focus on what’s most important.
1. Family
Are we cherishing and caring for those we love as they deserve? Are we pausing long enough to invest in a legacy of care and compassion that will be remembered by our kids, grandkids, and their future generations?
Family can be complicated, and no one can wound us like those closest to us. But that pain only exists because of the deep love we share. It’s worth the effort to communicate, forgive, and invest in one another. Family is too important to let distractions or misunderstandings drive us apart.
2. Faith
Faith remains the epicenter of my life. When storms rage and challenges arise, we turn to the one who gives us hope and a future. Faith isn’t just a holiday sentiment—it’s cultivated throughout the year, with moments of special significance during this season.
Faith is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance of what we do not see. While life doesn’t always unfold as we wish, faith reminds us that nothing is wasted and that a greater plan is at work—one beyond our wildest dreams.
3. Food
It may seem unusual to prioritize food, but in our family, food symbolizes more than sustenance —it’s a celebration of togetherness. Whether we’ve had plenty, just enough, or even very little, food has always brought us together.
In our gatherings, everyone contributes what they can. Some years, one part of the family can provide more than others, but it doesn’t matter—what matters is that we care for one another. Food nourishes not just the body, but the bond we share.
4. Laughter
Laughter has always been a hallmark of our family gatherings. It’s a tradition set by my parents and passed down to our children.
I’ve heard that some families struggle to gather without tension or conflict. If this resonates with you, perhaps it’s time to reset the tone. Life is too short to let past hurts or future worries dominate the present. Establishing an atmosphere of laughter and joy is a gift you can give to your family—and a legacy your children and grandchildren can carry forward.
My Prayer for You
As you step into this holiday season, may your heart be set on bringing out the best in your celebrations. Identify those closest to you, communicate expectations, and let family, faith, food, and laughter take center stage. May this season create memories that will be cherished and talked about for generations to come.
Blessings to you and your loved ones this holiday season.
