Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza Open in Sparks

Nevada veterans celebrated the opening of the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sparks in November. Community leaders, elected officials, veterans, and veteran organizations attended the opening, honoring veterans past and present. Nearly $1.3 million has been raised for the memorial from generous organizations and individuals to honor Nevadans, many of who gave their lives protecting our freedoms.

“It is our responsibility to acknowledge the sacrifice and accomplishments of those who gave a part of their youth, or the entirety of their lives for these great States,” said Sparks City Councilman Kristopher Dahir, a board member of the Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza Project. “We believe that it is our responsibility to build a Plaza to honor our Veterans, who allowed us the freedoms and rights we enjoy today, and to have a place to commemorate the brave actions of future generations of service men and women.”

The Plaza displays the names of 896 fallen Nevada veterans, provides a place to honor those who served our nation, and is a destination for veteran organizations to hold meetings. The memorial also includes a Ron E. Smith Educational Path honoring the late Sparks Mayor Ron Smith, a co-founder of the plaza.

The Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza is located on the west side of the Sparks Marina. To learn more about the project, visit nvmp.us.
