Experts tell us that in order to stay healthy as we age, we need to move our bodies, eat healthfully and stay socially involved with others. Senior Spectrum is full of activities to keep you busy at various senior centers and recreation centers here in Northern Nevada. In addition, other events and activities that you might enjoy are posted on bulletin boards at those centers, local libraries and churches. Here are some more October events that you might like to try:
At Teglia’s Paradise Park, on the border of Reno and Sparks, 2745 Elementary Dr., Reno, you can walk with AARP Age Friendly volunteers every Wednesday 10 am, October-April. Meet some new friends and take an easy walk on a flat path around the small lakes full of wildlife. Learn to play shuffleboard and bocce ball on third Saturdays 9-11 am, on the Paradise Park courts. Walk With A Doc is a national program that gives you a chance to hear a short health-related talk, ask questions, and take a gentle walk in the park with a local doctor. On October 15 at 10 am, join other AARP walkers and Dr. Ellia Ciammaichella, DO, to learn how “Self-Care is Not Selfish”. On November 12 at 10 am, she will walk with us again and explain how we can “Walk the Walk”. Meet the group in Paradise Park in the parking lot at 2745 Elementary Dr, Reno.
At the Paradise Park Community Garden, Wednesdays are volunteer days from 8 am-11 am, and on the last Wednesday in October, you can get some free veggies. All the garden boxes must be cleared by October 31, so you can help someone harvest their last flowers and vegetables and pull up the last plants to get ready for spring next year. Boxes will be available to rent again In April 2026. Stop by October 2 at 10 am, for a free Quick Pickling class and garden tour. RSVP for the class at 775-351-4771. On October 14 and 17 at 1 pm, watch a free play, “Arsenic and Old Lace”, performed by talented local senior actors while reading it aloud at the Ageless Repertory Theater – Monthly at Reno Little Theater, 147 E. Pueblo, Reno. Get free resource materials at the AARP table in the lobby.
Join a conversation group hosted by a Connections Central every first Tuesday at 1 pm, at South Valleys Library, every first Friday at 1 pm Sparks Library and at OLLI on November 12 at 10 am. The group facilitator gives everyone a chance to get to know each other and share their life experiences and perspectives during an hour of good conversation.
Come to the new free Tai Chi classes at Washoe County 9th Street Senior Center on Wednesdays at 10:30 am. The last Friday in the month has a DJ hosting the Senior Dance Party from 1 pm to 3 pm.and free ice cream until 1:30 pm.
