AARP Community Grant Challenge Grantee
The City of Reno has been awarded $11,900 from AARP The to fund additional senior technology classes. These funds will enhance the Seniors EngAGED program, by increasing technology competency among older adults in northern Nevada. The AARP Community Challenge is a grant program to make tangible improvements in communities that jump-start long-term change. It is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities’ initiative, which supports the efforts of cities, towns, neighborhoods, and rural areas to become great places to live for people of all ages.
The Seniors EngAGED program has already made a significant impact, with over 100 local seniors participating in monthly technology sessions. These classes, offered in both English and Spanish, teach older adults’ essential skills for using their smartphones, including both Android and iPhone devices. “We are thrilled to receive this grant from AARP,” said Izabella Baumann. “It’s amazing to see our seniors embrace new technologies, and this funding will allow us to expand our reach and help more residents stay connected and engaged in today’s digital world.” The class is composed of two 1.5-hour sessions and are held over two days. Seniors are required to attend both sessions. Upcoming classes include:
- September 5-6 at Evelyn Mount Northeast Center from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
- September 25-26 at Neil Road Recreation Center from 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM (Spanish Session Only)

Paradise Park Community Garden Update
The Paradise Park Community Garden is set for a vibrant revival, due to a collaborative effort between the City of Reno, Reno Food Systems, and the Center for Healthy Aging. This senior-focused project provides engagement opportunities, including nutrition, gardening, and food preparation workshops. The garden’s goal is to establish a safe and healthy community garden that provides fresh produce and promotes healthy nutrition, enhancing the quality of life for our senior community. Utilizing Senior ARPA funds, Reno Food Systems developed a plan to revitalize the garden. Reno Food Systems has hired a community garden coordinator responsible for maintaining the garden, creating an inclusive and accessible garden space, and growing produce to be delivered to local senior living communities such as the Reno Housing Authority and Volunteers of America. There are available plots for rent, numerous volunteer opportunities, and community workshops.
