Meet New Washoe County Senior Activities Coordinator
In June 2024, Bill Sero started his newly created job at Washoe County Senior Services as its first Senior Activities Coordinator. His office is located at the county’s 9th Street Senior Center, 1155 E. 9th Street in Reno. He has started daily visits to the county’s senior service centers to meet and talk to seniors there to find out what kinds of activities they would like to participate in at their sites. Then he will create and supervise new activities at all the sites.
Bill is a senior himself, and brings lifelong experience as an educator, workforce development director and activities coordinator. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, he followed his two adult sons to Reno about 11 years ago, fell in love with the area and decided to make this his home.
Before coming to Senior Services, Bill spent several years working for the state Department of Education, Training and Rehabilitation doing workforce development and vocational rehabilitation teaching adults and teens jobs skills and coaching them to succeed. He last worked for six years as the Activities Coordinator for the local Empowerment Center, a 5-month 12-Step program halfway house for women in recovery from drug/alcohol addiction. He created all kinds of activities there such as trips to Virginia City, horseback riding, community speakers, crafts and gardening classes and more. He is remarkably familiar with local group social, recreation, entertainment and learning opportunities and is ready to bring them to Washoe seniors at their centers.
Bill says, “I am very service-oriented and really enjoy talking to people and building relationships. It is extremely rewarding to bring smiles to seniors’ faces and help them create a community at all the centers.”
Over the next few months, you can meet and talk to Bill at the county senior service centers. Please give him your ideas and opinions about what kinds of activities you and other seniors at your center would enjoy. If you have never visited one of our senior service centers, please come check them out. In addition to eating lunch and making some new friends, you can get information about available resources for local seniors such as transportation, housing, health, caregiving, legal services and more. Bring a friend or neighbor along with you and enjoy some conversation and join in the activities or help Bill create some new ones. No reservation is needed at Reno for a hot meal, but you need to call to reserve a salad there. Reservations at all other sites must be made prior to 8:30am on the same day so that enough meals can be delivered to your chosen site. To reserve a meal, call 775-328 2786. No payment is required of seniors, but a suggested donation is $2 for 60 and over; under 60 pay $4.
