Every January, AARP’s national Age Friendly/Livable Communities initiative offers a Community Challenge Grant program to nonprofits and government entities to help communities make tangible improvements that jump-start long-term change especially for those age 50 and older. And here are Nevada’s three grant winners for 2025:
City of Reno Adaptive Recreation was awarded $15,686 to improve transportation and mobility options via bikeability to purchase a new Van Raam Fun2Go side-by-side tandem bike which allows two riders to cycle while sitting next to each other. This special bike is ideal for seniors or people with mobility limitations or special needs who want to cycle together. This activity promotes not only physical health but also mental health and well-being of the users. The Adaptive Cycling Center in Reno located at Rosewood Nature Study Area at 6800 Pembroke Drive in Reno, rents adaptive bikes for people of all ages and abilities, enhancing connectivity and access to local trails. The center offers a membership-based program for individuals with disabilities and older adults, promoting independence and well-being. Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation was awarded $11,000 to improve accessibility in public places which they will use to continue to fund their partnership with the national David’s Chair program at Rosewood Nature Study Area, in Reno. David’s Chair is an amazing track chair that allows people of all abilities to explore trails and uneven terrain especially for people with mobility challenges and those age 50 and over. This electric off-road wheelchair allows users to enjoy outdoor activities like traveling the trails, birdwatching and fishing. This grant will allow the Parks Foundation to continue to host the chair and offer its use for free. They also have four GRIT Freedom Chairs, all-terrain wheelchairs—three for adults and one for children that can be reserved as well. Claire McHenry, the

City of Reno Senior Engagement Programs was awarded $5000 to enhance activities at Tegilia’s Paradise Park Community Garden located at 2745 Elementary Drive in Reno. This garden gives community members a chance to grow fresh produce from April to October and provides fun activities and educational programs for a diverse community in our area. The garden features accessible, raised beds for older adults and hosts nutrition workshops, promoting health and community connection. According to Izabella Bauman, Senior Engagement Coordinator, “We’ll be working in partnership with Reno Food Systems and the Holland Project to offer art classes, chair yoga classes, workshops to teach use of herbs to make teas, easy ways to pickle vegetables, fun festivals and more.” Please contact her at seniors@reno.gov or 775-351-4771.
