The Legislature is due to end its every-other-year 120-day regular session on June 2, 2025, and could be called into special session by the Governor or by a two-thirds vote of the members of each legislative house if important business has not been completed. I hope you took the opportunity to give your opinions and testify on bills of interest to you by watching committees online or by contacting the bills’ sponsors and committees that heard them. To see where all the bills ended up, you can check the legislative website at https://www.leg.state.nv.us/.
All nine of the bills concerning seniors (AB65, AB135, AB145, AB338, AB361, AB514, AB519, SB60, SB76) that the Senior Coalition supported passed their house of origin. But those that had budgetary impacts were held in the Assembly Ways and Means or Senate Finance Committees until the last few weeks of the session due to national, state and local uncertainty about revenues that will be available for the state budget. All members are working hard to craft amendments, compromises and solutions to these funding barriers. And, even if the bills pass both houses, they go to the Governor’s desk next. The Governor must act on a bill within five days of receiving it (except for Sundays) if the Legislature is still in session. If he receives it less than five days from the end of the session or after the end of the session, he has ten days to act. He can sign the bill into law, allow it to become law without his signature or veto it. If vetoed while the Legislature is still in session, the bill is returned to the Legislature to consider a two-thirds majority override vote. If a veto occurs after the end of the session, the bill retunes to the next regular session to consider an override. Laws go into effect on October 1, 2025, unless otherwise noted in the bill.
In June, you can give your opinion to the Governor about whether to sign or veto a bill via phone call or email message at 775 684 5670 or Share. If there is a special session, you can contact your representative to give your views on issues under consideration there.
